Having lived most of my life in the Northwest, I had the opportunity to meet quite a few fisherman from Alaska. The commercial fishing boat that I bought in 1998 in Charleston Harbor, near Coos Bay, Oregon, was sold to me by the widow of a fisherman who died on a crab boat in Alaska. My friend who I bought the boat for had worked on a crab boat in Alaska. I met quite a few fisherman from Alaska at The Portside Restaurant in Charleston Harbor (my favorite seafood restaurant anywhere). Alaskan fishermen have an air about them that they have seen things that others have not seen, that cannot be explained to those who have not experienced them; they are correct.
The reality show "Deadliest Catch" is one of my favorite television shows. It is about real people living real lives. It is about pain, struggle, work, and survival; things that many of us can relate to. One of the underlying themes is also death, and losing co-workers and business associates and friends and family members.
Phil Harris was a fisherman in Alaska his whole life. Phil Harris had the opportunity to live a different life than most of us, and see things that most of us do not see. His years on this planet took him through many storms and trials.
Phil Harris will be missed by his family, friends, associates, fans, and the sea.
